  Some Bullseye FAQ’s

Q. I‘ve never shot Bullseye, is it complicated?  A. No, not at all! Although there are rules set by the NRA, these are rules of safety and fairness. There will always be Range Safety Officers and seasoned competitors there to get you accustomed and on your way.

Q. Is a Pistol Permit required in matches?  A. Yes, a valid permit is required by IPA rules and NYS-PA law, if you are competing. Anyone is welcome to come  watch, chat, and learn.

Q. Do I have to belong to the NRA (National Rifle Association)?  A. No, membership in the NRA is not required. However, there are many benefits to being an NRA member, and it is well worth the small annual fee. Ask us for more info or contact the NRA directly for details.

Q. Is Bullseye a moving or action type sport?  A. No, there is no moving or running around the range, as in other pistol sports. Shooters stand at a bench behind the firing line, the targets are fifty feet down range, and all shooting is done one-handed.

Q. What kinds of pistols are used? Will I have to spend a lot of money just to  get started?  A. No, almost any accurate .22 or center fire pistol can be used. Chances are, if you are reading this flyer, you most likely already own a pistol that will get you started.

Q. Is Bullseye shooting safe?  A. Yes, any organized match is one of the safest places to be due to the strict control by the range officer.  There has never been a known accident at an IPA match.

Q. Is this a family activity?   A. Yes, there are husband/wife and parent/child combinations on some teams.

Q. How much time does a bullseye match take?  A. A typical match is completed in 2-2.5 hours.

Q. Can a junior (14 – 20 yrs) shoot in this league?  A. Yes, juniors can compete under the direct supervision of a parent or guardian.

IPA History & Facts

The Interstate Pistol Association is one of the oldest and most comprehensive Conventional Pistol “Bullseye” leagues in the nation. The league was founded in 1936 to promote competitive pistol marksmanship and has operated continually since. The current IPA League is comprised of eight teams and four ranges located within the twin tiers of NY and PA. The league meets Friday nights from late September through March, excluding holidays. The league is sanctioned by the NRA and follows NRA Conventional Pistol guidelines. New teams with safe and adequate ranges are encouraged to apply for admission.
